Match Report

25th October 2008

Kircubbin travelled to Glengormley on Saturday to play Mossley FC in the first round of the Cochrane & Corry Cup. Even though their opponents were a division above them, Kircubbin knew they had nothing to fear from this encounter as they have previously reached the quarter final and semi final of this competition in earlier seasons.

Weather conditions played a major part in Saturday's game with a strong breeze helping one team in each half. Mossley elected to play with the wind in the first half, possibly looking to take an early advantage in the game. But it was the visitors who created the best of the opening chances. First effort on goal was a powerful snap shot from Peter Clancy, but it was straight at the keeper who collected the ball easily. Next on target was John Caughey, who found himself clean through on goal but again the Mossley keeper came to the rescue. David Arthurs and Shaun Clancy had the best of Kircubbin's other chances in the first half, but all to no avail. Mossley didn't create many chances with their added wind advantage, but they managed to convert their only chance of the first half, with an excellent turn and shot from the edge of the box. 1-0 at the break.

In the second half Kircubbin could afford to push forward with the wind at their backs. Adam Arthurs came on at the start of the half looking to score his first cup goal of the season. But for all the pressure, Kircubbin couldn't quite carve a decent opening to get the elusive equalising goal. John Caughey again came close with a powerful header from a corner, but the effort was just over the crossbar. In the dying minutes with everyone pushing forward the ball broke to Stephen Clarke inside the box, but the week shot never tested the Mossley keeper. Final score 1-0.

Next week the lads are back to league football with a home game against Rooftop. Players to meet at 1pm.
