Junior Shield Round 2
Kircubbin travelled to Bloomfield Playing fields to play Bangor Rangers seconds in the second round of the Junior Shield. With a good run of form behind them the Kircubbin team were still full of confidence, but playing a team from the lower leagues is never easy as you just don't know what to expect.
The superiority of the Division 2B leaders was evident right from the kick off as Kircubbin forced Bangor on to the back foot. The deadlock wasn't broken until the twenty fifth minute when Matthew Torney sneaked a shot through a packed area inside the post to give Kircubbin a slender lead. Minutes later the lead was doubled when Turlough Bell headed home from a corner. Bangor did push Kircubbin back on a number of occasions, but solid defensive work from the visitors restricted Bangor to long range shots which rarely troubled the Kircubbin keeper.
After the break Kircubbin continued their dominance and scored three further goals without reply. Matthew Clarke scored from open play and then from a penalty, and an unlucky own goal ended the rout for Kircubbin and secure their place in round three. The next round of the Junior Shield is at home to Santos FC on 28th November.
This week the lads face a sterner task away to Queens seconds in the second round of the Cochrane & Corry Cup. Last year's Division 2B winners now play on a 3rd Generation pitch, the team will be leaving at 11.30 to acclimatise themselves with the new surface.
