Clarence Cup Round 2
21st February 2009
Kircubbin travelled to Dromore on Saturday looking for a vital win that would lift them clear of the relegation battle they have found themselves in on recent weeks. It was the away side who started the better and could have took the lead five minutes in when Fintan Bell rounded the defenders only to see his strike go narrowly wide . Minutes later Brendan Masterson latched on to a through ball to go one on one with the goalkeeper , but his weak effort was easily saved .
On the half hour mark Kircubbin goalkeeper Eugene McGrattan seemed to be in no danger when receiving a pass from his brother Cahal, but in attempting to dribble the ball around the Dromore striker he lost the ball , gifting the home side an easy goal.
Kircubbin responded well and within ten minutes they had levelled. A cross from the right wing was cleared by the Dromore defender only to be met by right back Patrick O’Prey who powered home a superb equaliser from 25 yards.
Kircubbin's pressure paid off when minutes later they took a well deserved lead. Cahal ran the ball out from defence and played in Matthew Torney who calmy slid the ball under the oncoming keeper to score what would prove to be the winning goal of the game.
The second half was a drab affair with few chances of note, but Kircubbin held firm for all three points. An important victory for Kircubbin. This week the lads travel to Ballyclare to play high flying Grange Rangers. Team to leave at noon.
