Kircubbin retained top spot in Division 2B with an emphatic 4-1 victory away to Wesely FC of Lisburn. The opening period of play was dominated by Kircubbin who pushed forward in wave after wave of attacking football. Wesely's defensive efforts managed to keep Kircubbin at bay for the first twenty minutes, but a fine piece of individual skill from leading scorer Turlough Bell opened the scoring in the 22nd minute. He received the ball on the edge of the box and managed to turn past two defenders to shot low into the bottom corner of the net. The single goal seemed to deflate the home team as Kircubbin were now given room to pass the ball through midfield. The second goal which came on the half hour, was much more of a team effort with great inter-play on the right wing resulting in the simplest of headed goals from Jonnie Clarke. Wesely's threat mainly came from the aerial ability of the tall strikers, but Cahal McGrattan and Matthew Torney easily snubbed out that option for the home team. Before the break Kircubbin effectively killed off the game with another cross from the right wing, this time volleyed powerfully into net by Jonnie for his second of the game. 0-3 at half time.
Within a minute of the restart Kircubbin had increased their lead when Jonnie converted a penalty kick. This left Kircubbin plenty of options to make a few changes in personnel, and to try out a few different options in team formation. Chris Wright came on in place of the injured Jamie Fowler, and minutes later Brendan Masterson made his comeback with team captain Jonnie seemingly suffering a hamstring injury. Wesley also made their three changes, and managed to come back into the game for the final twenty minutes. But it was a case of too little too late for the home team as Kircubbin comfortably dealt with all that was thrown at them. In the dying minutes Wesely were awarded a penalty although if video evidence was available it looked clear that the foul was committed outside the box. The spot kick was converted to leave the final score Wesley 1 Kircubbin 4.
This week the team travel to Whitehead. Transport to leave at 11.45am.
