Kircubbin made the long journey to Whitehead last Tuesday night looking to maintain their run of recent good form. Having won a tight match against their opponents only ten days earlier, Kircubbin knew that this match was not going to be an easy encounter.
With only twelve players to choose from Kircubbin's team selection wasn't difficult with Jamie Fowler returning from injury as the only available sub. Fintan was in goals with Matthew Torney, Philip McCarthy, Shaun Clancy and Cairan Taylor plating in defence. Ross McCann, Mick O'Prey, Adam Arthurs and Brendan Masterson made up the midfield quartet, with Turlough Bell and Matthew Clarke leading the line in attack. Whitehead started the game well with an advantage of a strong breeze blowing down the pitch. Kircubbin on the other hand didn't seem to settle into the game for the first twenty minutes or so. Whitehead took a deserved lead in the match when the nippy winger crossed to the unmarked centre forward to tap the ball into the empty net. The home team had a couple of half chances to increase their lead, but poor finishing let them down. Eventually Kircubbin got themselves into the game and used their pace in attack to cause the Whitehead defence some problems. Turlough scored a trademark goal cutting in from the right wing and blasting a powerful shot past the keeper from close range to bring the teams level just before the break.
In the second half Kircubbin began to take control of the game. But Whitehead were far from beaten. Ross could have given Kircubbin the lead in a goal mouth scramble, but miraculously the ball didn't get over the line. Adam was next to try his luck when his shot to the back post just curled wide of the target. Mick also had a chance well saved by the Whitehead keeper as Kircubbin pushed for the decisive goal. With time running out Adam snatched victory for Kircubbin with an excellent break away goal for Kircubbin to secure all three points for the visitors. This Saturday the lads are at home to Finaghy, team to meet at 1pm.
