Kircubbin played hosts to high flying Kelvin FC. With both teams sitting third and fourth in the league this promised to be a tough encounter. It was a bitterly cold afternoon, and Kelvin won the toss and elected to play with the strong breeze in the first half. This decision paid immediate dividends as they scored their opening goal of the game in the second minute. A high ball into the box wasn't dealt with by the Kircubbin defence, allowing Kelvin's striker to shoot low into the corner of the net from close range. Kircubbin got back on level terms within ten minutes as Matthew's deflected shot sneaked past the diving keeper. Minutes later the home team took the lead with Philip McCarthy finally poking the ball home following a goal mouth scramble. The scoring was far from over, as Kelvin then replied with two goals of their own to leave the score 2-3 after only 25 minutes. Turlough Bell was unlucky not to level matters before half time after his fierce shot rebounded off the post, but Philip was on hand to force the ball in to level the game at half time. 3-3.
In the second half Kircubbin were now playing with the advantage of the wind, but the game had settled down much more as both teams seemed to be more composed in defence. Kircubbin started to dominate the game, and forced Kelvin back, restricting their movement forward and giving them very little time on the ball in midfield. Mick O'Prey won the ball in centre midfield and went on a quick counter attack, eventually crossing the ball to Turlough Bell from the right wing. Kircubbin's leading scorer smashed the ball into the net to give Kircubbin a well deserved lead. But yet again the team in the lead could not hold on to it for long as Kelvin capitalised on more Kircubbin hesitation at the back, and scored their fourth goal of the game. Time was now running out, but with only eight minutes left on the clock Kircubbin took the lead again with a close range goal. But Kelvin played right to the final whistle and got their just rewards when a dubious offside decision allowed Kelvin to score an equaliser in the dying minutes of the game. Final score 5-5 in an exciting game.
