Last Saturday Kircubbin played hosts to 4th Newtownabbey in the Daily Mirror Northern Amateur football league, looking for a vital three points to edge clear of the relegation battle at the foot of the table. In a stunning first half performance Kircubbin scored four goals without reply, effectively winning the game in the opening 45 minutes. Leading scorer Matthew Torney netted the first goal as early as the second minute to stun the visitors, and a pin point header from Ross McCann two minutes later gave the home team the perfect start and a two goal cushion. Matthew added his second and Jonnie Clarke completed the scoring in the first half with a powerful shot into the roof of the net. Kircubbin could have scored several more, with Fintan Bell missing four individual chances 1 on 1 with the keeper.
In the second half 4th came out of the blocks fighting and reduced the arrears within ten minutes following a defencive lapse. A shock comeback seemed to be on the cards when they scored again midway through the half. But a third goal from Matthew Torney secured all three points. For the final fifteen minutes of the game 4th pushed forward without much final product, and their task was made even more difficult as they had a man sent off in the dying minutes.
Final score an comfortable 5 - 3 victory.
