Match Report
17th January 2009
Kircubbin travelled to ‘The Dub’ in Belfast to play Queens on Saturday hoping to come away with a result after recent disappointing results. The match started in wet and windy conditions which progressively worsened as the match continued. Kircubbin played against the wind in the opening period and the home side took full advantage with the wind at their backs. A powerful long range shot mid way through the half gave Queens the lead. But Kircubbin were not letting the appauling weather conditions dampen their spirits and they constantly pushed forward in search of an equaliser. Clear cut chances were few and far between and the chance of note saw Brendan Masterson equalise for the visitors with a far post header after a fine cross from Jonnie Clarke on the right wing. 1-1 at the break.
At the start of the second half the weather conditions were at their worst with a gale force wind and heavy rain making it impossible for either team to play pretty football. Against the run of play on the hour mark, Kircubbin defender Cahal McGrattan sliced a clearance towards his own goals, allowing the Queens striker to run in on goal unchallenged and put his team 2-1 up. But Kircubbin responded almot immediately, Brendan Masterson crossed the ball low into the box for Ross McCann to slide the ball under the keeper. The remaining 20 minutes consisted of Kircubbin pressure as the home side found it impossible to get out of their own half, in the dying minutes Brendan Masterson and Jonnie Clarke both wasted half chances to win the game for Kircubbin, failing to find the net with only the goalkeeper to beat. But a draw was probably a fair result given the terrible weather conditions. Final score 2-2.
