Kircubbin hosted Lisburn team Wesley last Saturday in their first league game for three weeks. The visitors had beaten Kircubbin twice last year, scoring eight goals in the process, so Kircubbin knew this was not going to be easy. But straight from the kick off the visitors were on the front foot, and created a shooting chance inside the opening minute. For some reason the Kircubbin team looked very lethargic in the opening spell, which Wesley took full advantage of. They took the lead with the simplest of goals, a tap in at the back post from an unmarked striker. Very disappointing from the managers point of view. It took Kircubbin a full fifteen minutes to get going in the game, by which time Wesley could have doubled their lead only for a lack of composure in front of goal to let them down. Matthew Clarke equalised for Kircubbin and shortly afterwards Turlough Bell gave Kircubbin the lead. With ten minutes remaining in the half Kircubbin started to gel together and showed exactly why they are currently sitting top of the league. Mick O'Prey added to his personal tally for the season, and Kircubbin looked to be in a strong position. But again they allowed Wesley back into the game with another simple goal. Time was now running out in the opening period, when Adam Arthurs scored a quick goal on the break to give Kircubbin a 4-2 lead at half time.
In the second half Wesley played a more composed game, but didn't create many chances of note. Kircubbin seemed to just sit back on their lead and play the clock down. It was a rather dull affair with little excitement in the first 30 minutes. But late in the game Matthew Clarke doubled his tally for the day and virtually secured all three points for the home team. In the dying minutes Adam also scored his second of the day with a well executed lob over the advancing keeper. Final score 6-2.
This week Kircubbin host Immaculata. The current Junior Shield, Junior Cup and Clarence Cup holders will obviously provide a sterner task for Stephen Clarke's team. Players to meet at noon for a 1pm early kick off.
