Kircubbin travelled to Belfast last Saturday to play Finaghy, currently lying bottom of the league. Following a couple of disappointing performances in recent weeks Kircubbin were now looking to bounce back into the promotion race, and they did that emphatically in the opening 45 minutes.
Fintan Bell was recalled to nets in the absence of Eugene McGrattan. Cahal McGrattan, Matthew Torney, Jamie Fowler and Ciaran Taylor made up the defensive quartet. Ross and Francis McCann anchored the centre of midfield, with Adam Arthurs and Shaun Clancy providing the width on both wings. Turlough Bell and team captain Jonnie Clarke lead the line in attack. It didn't take long for Kircubbin to take the lead, as Francis McCann was first to react to a breaking ball inside the box to smash home an opening goal in the sixth minute. Two minutes later the lead was doubled when Turlough Bell beat the offside trap to round the defence and cross the ball to Jonnie who couldn't miss from five yards. Jonnie, Francis and Turlough all missed chances to extend the lead as Kircubbin were totally dominant all over the pitch. Fintan had very little to do in the first half, with the exception of one shot which he pushed round the post. From the resulting corner Kircubbin caught Finaghy on a quick counter attack and leading scorer Turlough added to his personal tally for the season. Cahal McGrattan went on a trademark run late in the first half and played a clever 1-2 with Shaun Clancy, and Cahal made no mistake when he raced through and calmly slotted the ball under the diving keeper. Just before the half time whistle Jonnie scored his second of the game to complete a first half rout. 0-5 at the break.
In the second half the team seemed to take their foot of the pedal slightly and gifted Finaghy a consolation goal with very poor marking inside the box. But Francis McCann scored his second of the day with a break from the centre of midfield. The remainder of the half was more evenly contested as Finaghy gradually came into the game, but neither team created any clear cut chances and the match eventually ended in a 6-1 win for the visitors.
This week the team are at home to Bangor YM. Team to meet at 1pm.
