Kircubbin hosted Rooftop last Saturday, knowing that only another victory would help keep their promotion dreams on track. The rain earlier in the week had thankfully soaked away, leaving perfect playing conditions for the match. With Eugene McGrattan, Jamie Fowler and Jonnie Clarke all on the injured list, Kircubbin's squad was stretched to the max. Fintan continued his good run of form in goals, with Ciaran Taylor, Shaun Clancy, Matthew Torney and Cahal McGrattan along the back four. Ross McCann and Philip McCarthy anchored the midfield, allowing Adam Arthurs and Mick O Prey plenty of room on the wings. Turlough Bell and Matthew Clarke led the line in attack. The opening spell of the game was evenly contested as Kircubbin made a cautious opening to the match. Rooftop were playing with three in centre midfield which initially gave Kircubbin problems. But when the ball was pushed wide, both Mick and Adam were given loads of space to trouble the Rooftop defence. The opening goal came after fifteen minutes when Ross powered a header past the keeper. This seemed to open the flood gates for Kircubbin who were now exploiting the visitors weakness on the wings. Matthew Clarke was next on the score sheet with the deftest of touches from Mick's cross ball. Philip McCarthy and Mick O Prey then got in on the action with two more goals effectively ending the match as a contest. Just before the beak Adam Arthurs completed the scoring from the midfield quartet with a fine finish low to the keepers right. 5-0 at the break.
Francis McCann and Brendan Masterson came on in the second half, and Rooftop were much more resolute with a change in formation. Turlough added to his personal tally for the season with a powerful drive past the keeper. The scoreline could have been more but for some poor finishing up front, especially from manager Stephen Clarke making a rare appearance as a substitute. Final score 6-0 which keeps Kircubbin's promotion push on track with only a handful of games to go.
This week the team are at home to Whitehead Eagles. Team to meet at 1pm.
